“In all, What She Inherits is a successful, rich read of self-discovery, and interwoven narratives keep the pace quick and ever-shifting. Southern coastal scenes paint a rich landscape of rocks, ocean, trees, and natural surroundings which enhance the experience of these characters’ lives. Similarly, seances, mediums, and other mystical themes keep the story edgy and dark, building mystery and intrigue until the very end.”
~Megan Roth for IndieReader

"What She Inherits is a ghost story that reminds us that not all secrets are better off buried. A perfect blend of mystery, longing, and coffee shop romance."
~Stephanie Monahan, author of The Mean Girl Apologies and 33 Valentines

About the Book

When Angela Ellis returns to her childhood home on St. Nabor Island, South Carolina, her junior year of college interrupted indefinitely by her mother's death, she doesn't know how she'll ever be able to function in the world without her mother's love, support, and guidance. Soon after her mother's funeral, strange sounds begin to trouble her in the night, sounds she swears are her mother's angry voice. In an effort to find peace for herself and for her mother's restless spirit, Angela begins a ghost hunt that makes her friends fear for her sanity and that leads her to more questions than answers. Her parents, it turns out, were extraordinary secret keepers, and now Angela is on her own to discover the truth.

One thousand miles away on Devil's Back Island, Casey Seaver has built a sweet life for herself hidden away from the rest of the world in Maine's Casco Bay. She runs a small café and keeps to herself, rarely visiting the mainland. When a posthumous letter arrives from her estranged mother, old memories and new problems interrupt her island idyll. For twenty years she has been trying to forget the mistakes and injustices of her youth, and she has nearly convinced herself she has succeeded, but her mother's words shatter that illusion. As she tries ignore her mother's dying wishes, a stranger arrives on the island, looking to bring Devil's Back into the twenty-first century at last. If he has his way, Casey's island haven will be a refuge no more.

As plans for a new resort on Devil's Back spur Casey to move her life forward, Angela's ghost investigation forces her to examine the past. Fate has put their lives on a collision course, and through each other, they will find the way through their grief.

What She Inherits eBook Diane V Mulligan

In What She Inherits, Diane Mulligan does a superb job weaving together two disparate stories in two different states, each with their own cast of characters, before she brings it all together in a seamless and satisfying fashion. This is Ms. Mulligan's third novel and it is, in my opinion, her best one yet. The main characters are nuanced and well-drawn, while the supporting characters have depth and realism. This is what I like about Ms. Mulligan's previous fiction: you can recognize her characters because they seem like real people you might meet. And yet there is something about this story which drives it even beyond her previous 2 novels. There is a ghost story aspect, but even if you're not one for the paranormal, this remains a very enjoyable book. I found myself eagerly looking forward to my reading time because I became invested in the lives of the characters and I rooted for them in their struggles. We all inherit so much--both good and bad--from our families and the book does not shy away from meditating on the complexity of that inheritance. As you turn the pages, you can see a maturing author hitting her stride with this very entertaining and well-written novel. I would highly recommend it.

What She Inherits eBook Diane V Mulligan Reviews

Sat and read this novel in two sittings, couldn't put it down. The descriptions are so vivid and realistic I felt as though I were living the scenes with the characters. Great read!
When ordering a free book for my I usually know pretty quickly whether the author can pull me in and hold my attention. This was one of those books. I loved this story, it was very well written, and edited very well, too. I enjoyed the method the author used of alternating the characters POV. The setting in Maine really pulled my heartstrings as I've spent some time there and long to return--she made me feel I was there with her lovely descriptions of the ocean, foggy mornings and the pristine rocky coast. The paranormal you're either going to like or not, and although I don't agree with everything the author wrote, there were some experiences that I totally resonated with. Recommended!
It is a heart warming story. However. I found the format where characters were introduced individually with little hint that their lives were connected very confusing. I almost put the book down several times for that reason. Loved the sweet ending though.
The book was hard to put down, but whenever I picked it back up I fell right back into the story without having to remember who was who like sometimes happens when a story has wooden characters that don’t make an impression. At first I’d wished the book didn’t jump back and forth between two plots, but figured the author had a good reason for doing that. Several times I thought I’d guessed the plot and hadn’t. Originally I’d wanted to read the book because it was set partially in Maine where my son lives. It’s so well written that I felt like I’d had a short vacation there, Very enjoyable!
very flat. flighty college girls no apparent plot
This is the third book I've read by this author, and this is the best one yet. The main shortcomings I found in the author's earlier works were pace and dialogue. Both are much improved in this work. First, the pace is great. I was surprised that other reviewers thought this took a few chapters to get into. I was hooked right away. I also liked the author's use of different P.O.V.'s throughout the narrative. The author uses this tool to develop the characters and build up to the point where the story lines finally converge. Like any good use of various P.O.V.'s, I often couldn't put the book down because I had to know what each character was up to. Second, the dialogue is much improved. I did not have any moments where I thought to myself that a character's response was not believable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone (despite the cover art that makes it seem like a chick-lit book). It's a great quasi-ghost story with relatable characters. I hope the author continues the stories of Angela and Casey.
This book is well written, but the first half was a little confusing. Chapters 1,3,5 were about a little town in NC and one group of people; then Chapters 2,4,6 were about an island in Maine and a separate group of people, however the first clue was a death in each. Halfway through the book things change. From this point there are ghost hunters chasing ghosts, a medium, voices, things that go bump into the night, seances and finding the missing pieces or people. All the story lines start coming together with a lot of tears and laughter. I'm not really telling you anything about the content hoping you will purchase the book and read it. You'll love the outcome.
